Lead Materials Engineer

Lead Materials Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Materials Engineer to lead the development and scaling of materials and processes for our micro-tubular SOFC stacks. In this role, you will own the translation of laboratory methods into robust, repeatable processes: ensuring performance, durability, and manufacturability as we move from prototypes to commercialisation.

You will act as a technical leader in the R&D team, mentoring junior colleagues, coordinating with other disciplines, and taking responsibility for the success of materials-related work packages. Your expertise will directly shape our ability to deliver our novel fuel cell systems at scale.

Your tasks

  • Lead the design and optimization of materials and deposition processes for electrolytes, electrodes, and coatings
  • Establish and refine manufacturing protocols and SOPs to ensure reproducible fabrication
  • Guide experimental campaigns and ensure results are analyzed, documented, and translated into best practices
  • Collaborate with other teams to link materials and processes with fuel cell performance and durability
  • Supervise and mentor technicians, interns, and junior engineers, ensuring efficient lab execution and professional growth
  • Take ownership of project deliverables related to materials and process engineering, including technical reporting for internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to IP recognition and process innovation

Your qualification

  • MSc or PhD in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in materials development, ideally in an industrial or applied R&D environment
  • Strong track record in process development: from lab methods to stable, scalable protocols
  • Expertise in materials synthesis, deposition methods, and thermal processing
  • Hands-on proficiency with key characterization methods (e.g., SEM, XRD, TGA/DSC)
  • Proven ability to lead projects, take ownership of deliverables, and mentor less experienced colleagues
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Seniority levels

We are hiring at multiple levels (junior to senior). Candidates with less experience will be supported in learning and growth. More experienced candidates will be expected to take ownership of projects, mentor colleagues, and contribute to technical leadership.
